Chico Hamilton Plans New Recording

Joyous Shout! is happy to announce that Legendary Jazz Drummer & Bandleader Chico Hamilton has been rehearsing throughout May with his young "Euphoria" group- with Cary DeNigris on guitar, Paul Ramsey on bass, Evan Schwam on tenor sax, Erik Lawrence on alto and soprano sax, and Karolina Strassmeyer on flute, alto and soprano sax- preparing to go back into the studio in June to record his follow up to FORESTSTORN for Koch Jazz(www.kochentertainment.com). The new album, THOUGHTS OF..., will be a SWING, SWING, SWINGING affair and feature guest spots from several HEAVY WEIGHTS from the world of jazz guitar who have passed thru Chico's group, Joe Beck, Larry Coryell and Rodney Jones. The new album will feature new original compositions from Chico, a couple of standards, and several SWINGING arrangements of surprising contemporary covers. THOUGHTS OF... will drop early Fall, and will amplify the sentiments Robin Tolleson declared in his November 2001 Down Beat feature on Chico, "Still the Man", "It's clear that Chico Hamilton fancies himself a 'Mod'."

Also due early Fall is the first release to see the light of day from the project on the Soulfeast label: GROOVE MASTER VOL. 1: SOULFEAST PRESENTS THE CHICO HAMILTON REMIX PROJECT, featuring remixes from Still Phil, MKL vs. Soy Sos, DJ Smash, and Soulfeast- Joaquin "Joe" Claussell and Brian Bacchus. Over the years, Chico has had a series of dance floor successes, including his signature song "Conquistadors" from his 60's Impulse album EL CHICO, and the Brazilian influenced song "Strut" from Chico's 1979 outing on Elektra NOMAD, which became so successful on the Northern Soul Scene in the U.K. that it had its own dance!! Earlier this year a track titled "For Mods Only" from Chico's 1968 Impulse album THE DEALER, was included on the latest offering from Thievery Corporation- SOUNDS FROM THE VERVE HI-FI. GROOVE MASTER VOL. 1 will appear on 12" EP and CD.

Chico will be making two benefit appearances in June, a solo appearance on June 10th at Symphony Space in NYC for the Broadway Mall Association, and an appearance with his "Euphoria" group on June 15th at The Wild Rose Cafe in Bridgehampton, NY for the Hayground School. On July 5th, Chico will be awarded the WPBX-FM Radio Lifetime Achievement Award at a ceremony in Sagaponak, NY. Coming late-Summer, early-Fall will be several key shows to help to establish the new album, including August 24th on the Berkshire Jazz Festival, Great Barrington, Mass (w/ "Euphoria"), August 29th on the Chicago Jazz Festival, Chicago, IL (w/ "Euphoria" + Special Guests Arthur Blythe & Larry Coryell), September 2nd on the Bumbershoot Festival, Seattle, WA (w/ "Euphoria") October 5th at Richard Stockton College, Pomona, NJ (w/ "Euphoria").
